‘Where Are They Now?’ – David Lowe

I was always enthralled by the BBC, growing up in the 1970s and I harboured a secret ambition to work for the corporation one day.

In one of those perfect Sliding Doors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sliding_Doors) moments, I went to a sixth-form careers talk one afternoon at school. A teacher had done some work experience at Radio Birmingham and told us all about Pebble Mill and Radio Production. Afterwards, I told him about my dream of working for the BBC.

He took me to his office and gave Roger Thomas, the BBC Radio Birmingham Education Producer, a ring to see if I could help out on the young people’s show Radio Brum Club (http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/birmingham/hi/tv_and_radio/newsid_8944000/8944511.stm).

The thrill of walking into Pebble Mill for the first time was one of those life-changing moments – I thought, “This is for me!” – I went in every week and got more and more involved, learning all about radio production.

I got into making jingles and loved getting creative, using sound effects and tape echo. I’d spend hours in the studio immersed in spools of reel-to-reel tape, often until late into the night, surprising Dennis from security, who would have to let me out through the back entrance.

In the meantime, I went on to Birmingham Polytechnic to do a three-year Media Studies course. After finishing there, I freelanced for a year or so at Radio WM, as a Station Assistant. I had a brilliant time working with amazing people and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I was given and everything I learned.

Then I heard that Jim Knights was looking for a Sound Recordist at Magpie Films. I went to see him in the Magpie Portakabin behind the OB garage and he sent me on a week’s tryout with the Midlands Today (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6183700/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) crew. Amazingly, Jim offered me the job – a whole new experience, working in TV.

Christmas 1989/90. Piece to camera in front of the ‘People’s Palace (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_the_Parliament)’, Bucharest for Canadian Television News, CBC. Reporter is Alan Abel. I can’t remember the Cameraman’s or Producer’s name, but I do remember coming under fire from snipers on the trip!

Meanwhile, outside of work, I was also really into music. I didn’t have any formal training but dabbled in the piano and loved electronic music and synthesisers. Around 1981, Roland – a Japanese synthesiser manufacturer, brought out a model called Juno-6 (https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal/roland-juno-history) . My friend suggested I should buy one and a lightbulb switched on in my head – why not?! From the minute I got it out of the box, plugged it in and started playing, I was hooked and haven’t stopped since.

I wrote loads of songs and got a band together called ‘The Cool Fish’ with Samantha Meah, who went on to present Network East, followed by her shows on Radio WM. We got some pretty decent gigs too, but I was more into the studio side; writing, creating and mixing.

The second big sliding doors moment happened one evening after work, in the BBC Club on the second floor. Magpie Cameraman, Charlie Pitt, was chatting with Graphic Designer, Richard Burns, so I wandered over to say hello. Charlie introduced me and enthused Richard about my music, the Juno 6 synth and the great sounds it made. Richard uttered the immortal words, “I need some music for the new titles for Midlands Today (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midlands_Today) – do you fancy having a go?”. I didn’t hesitate!

I put a demo together and, to my delight, they liked it. My first theme tune was officially commissioned by the BBC Music Department and I was booked into Studio 1 at Pebble Mill to re-record it at broadcast quality. I was thrilled – in true BBC style, there was an engineer, assistant and even a guy to check the wiring was okay on my synth before I was allowed to plug it in.

Eventually, I left Magpie and in 1987 went freelance, as a Sound Recordist/Music Composer. Music commissions from Pebble Mill started to pick up with Boating Butler (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiCmpLBeTjI&list=PL1vazjYo0VNmcJpuV3JhDHtZSS5GIm2Gx) , Take A Break and my first network shows, On the House (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/on-the-house/) and Countryfile (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOMXAahPNVA) , after its regional predecessor, Your Country Needs You.

I started a long working relationship with Simon King (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_King_(broadcaster)) , composing the music with him for King and Company, Walk on the Wildside and co-writing the music with Simon for eight of his Christmas films, starting with Drift The Mute Swan. For Kali the Lion (https://youtu.be/2bb9f3N8_PU) , I met Simon, filming in Kenya and we recorded some local Masai people, which was fantastic.

I met Roy Ronnie’s son, Julian, who was a Musical Director. We got on really well and Julian suggested he could try and get us some work together. True to his word, he landed a meeting with a producer at Saatchi & Saatchi (https://saatchi.co.uk) and a demo for the latest major budget global TV ad for British Airways. Julian had suggested an idea – as the commercial had a world flavour – how about we try a world music mix of an opera theme? To our amazement, they liked our track and flew us to Los Angeles to complete it! It took some work and a fair amount of stress to get the idea right, but It was finally signed off six months later, back in the UK. The BA ad (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/british-airways/) was our big break; from then on, I was composing full-time.

Julian and I met Charlie Gillett, who signed us up to his label, Oval Music (https://www.ovalmusic.co.uk) . After a while, Julian moved back to musical theatre and I made my first album, entitled Dreamcatcher (https://davidlowemusic.com/product/dreamcatcher-dreamcatcher/), released in 1997.

In 1998 with Charlie and Oval, another massive dream became reality – I had a hit single in the charts with Would You…? (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/touch-and-go/) The project name was Touch and Go (https://davidlowemusic.com/product/i-find-you-very-attractive-touch-go/) . It got to Number 3 in November 1998 and Number 1 in the UK Indie Chart. 25 years later (as I’m writing this), in October 2023, a remix by DJ Campbell hit the charts again at Number 35, which is really exciting.

In 1999, BBC Worldwide Music got in touch to ask if I’d like to be considered for the BBC News Brand project, with a list of other composers. I had a meeting with Martin Lambie-Nairn, the Creative Director, who told me they were looking for a complete rebrand and a totally new sound.

A couple of weeks later, I got a call to say they wanted to work with me – I was over the moon. I went to another meeting where Martin explained more about what he was looking for – a distinctive memorable sound, instantly recognisable, a modern and different new idea that would retain the integrity and gravitas of BBC News. They played me a dance track they’d cut some graphics to, which worked really well. We were talking about distinctive sounds and the GMT signal pips came up, as they are instantly recognisable, as soon as you hear them. As we talked, an idea was formulating in my head – the pips with a dance beat. I had to meet the BBC Team fairly swiftly with some ideas, to get the ball rolling. When I got back to my studio, I put my idea together using the pips with a dance beat at 120 bpm (two beats per second), a bass line with a world feel and two big cinematic chords underpinning it all, from minor to major.

Back at Television Centre two days later, I played my idea to Martin and the assembled team of BBC News executives, nervously waiting for their response. Martin looked at me wide-eyed and finally exclaimed, “That’s it! You’ve done it!! That’s the idea – don’t change a thing!”

25 years later, the music has evolved but the core idea is still the same. I’ve done over 2,000 variations of the music for BBC News globally, including the now-famous Countdown (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bP2OtfqZDT8) sequence at the top of the hour. In 2013, we recorded the countdown with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios and I adapted it for a sombre version, used when the Queen passed away.

Creating brand and news idents for international clients has also been interesting, including for CCTV (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/cctv-1/) in China, NDTV (https://youtu.be/wH4utRfurG0) in India and Al Arabiya TV (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/al-arabiya/) in Dubai. For those, I used instrumentation and melodic flavours and textures from each country.

I’ve also enjoyed arranging and creating new versions of some iconic tunes – most recently with the Antiques Roadshow theme and also Panorama, The X Factor (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/x-factory-celebrity/) and, in 2012, a version of Chariots of Fire (https://davidlowemusic.com/project/london-olympics-2012/) for the London Olympics, which was played during the medal ceremonies.

It’s now forty years since I wrote that first theme for Midlands Today (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgLBR_hZbfE). Having wanted to work for the BBC from so early on, to end up creating something iconic for the BBC is such a thrill and honour. I’ve been fortunate to have enjoyed a really exciting career and it is still going strong. None of it would have happened without my amazing time at Pebble Mill, where it all started and where I learned so much.

Keith Brook (aka Scouse):”‘Nai Zindagi-Naya Jeevan’ was the Urdu and Hindi for ‘New Way -New Life’ but was generically called ‘New Life’. It wasn’t renamed, it stayed like that into the 80s.

I worked on it as a cameraman, of course, but I also did a year or so directing it.

It was great fun, if a little disorganised. Getting everyone from our side into the studio was a little like herding cats.

Still, the real upside was that Ashok Rampal, Saleem Shahed and Mahendra Kaul and I were frequently invited to Indian and Pakistani houses for ‘real’ curries. Absolutely delicious!!

The best one was Madhur Jaffrey’s rather swish place. Best food of all!!

Still, I got a lot of pleasure out of it because it was a programme FOR Asians rather than about. At that time there were many elderly relatives who couldn’t speak English and it was their half hour of entertainment. For that reason alone, it was a delight.

I had the same feeling of fulfillment when I did a stretch on Open University. There wasn’t a big audience for each course, but every programme had an RI of 100%.

Still, every programme we did in Pebble Ill was fulfilling and it was a joy to work with such talented people.”

Terry Barker: “I worked for Nahrendra Morar as his PA from 92 to 94 and remember the diversity of programmes that came out of the multicultural department then. Charles Bruce and Farah Durrani made some terrific documentaries. Had a great time.”

Bridget Catherine Vaughan: “My first staff post, after 2 years of “temping” was in Asian Unit with Lisa Sommerville, Chris Hardman, Jayne Savage…..fab time”

Simon Edwards: “I recall working as camera assistant on the titles (on 16mm) for a programme called “All Black”. Not sure if that was a working title but it would have been early 90’s. We shot some of it in the studio at the Mill and then locations in London. Chris Weaver was the lighting cameraman and Wilfred E-J directed it.”

Café 21 has its first series running from mid-November 1997 to the end of January 1998, at 11.20 am on Saturday mornings, BBC 2. A part of the Asia 2 slot, which also includes Network East and Q Asia, the show heralded the arrival of young British Asians being able to talk about themselves on national television. A milestone in Asian programming.

Café 21’s ethos is to give young British Asians a voice. Across 9 shows last year, including a 1 hour special on Sexuality, the show became a talking point in its own right. Tackling issues like Asian identity, families and mixed race relationships head on, put the show on the map. Myths were exploded and stereotypes challenged, while the Café guests put paid to the, ‘corner-shops and curry’ image it could be argued still exists with regard to the British Asian population.

Café 21 balanced hard-hitting opinions and personal stories to create what could be described as a ‘chat-show soap’.

Series 2

Café 21 wants to continue in this spirit to find fascinating people for Series 2. Due to the success of the first series, the show will have a longer run and a higher profile slot. As well as maintaining the Saturday morning slot, the first airing of each week’s topic will now be late on Friday night on BBC 2.

This late night slot means that this series will be even more revealing, controversial and risky than the first.

We need to appeal to young Asians, between the ages of 16 and 29, to apply to be on the show. Potential contributors don’t need to be experts – we need real people with real life experiences, not accomplished television professionals. That is not what Café 21 is about.

We are particularly keen to ensure that all regional areas of the British Asian community are represented on the show this year. We need to hear from people outside of the Midlands and Greater London. We want varied accents and backgrounds on air to reflect that the Asian population is significant nationwide!

The new series will start on Friday 2nd October and will run for 11 weeks. During this series we will tackle such diverse topics as the question of whether Asians can laugh at themselves and Boypower, Taboos and Brothers – A girl’s best friend or her worst enemy?

We are conducting auditions now, and will be travelling around the country to meet with people.

50 Years of BBC Asian Programmes

“The BBC is celebrating 50 years of its programming for South Asian immigrants which started in the 60s and for the subsequent new British Asian generations into the 80s, 90s and onwards.

Programming for Asian immigrants who arrived in Britain started at 9.00am on 10th October 1965 on BBC1.

In Logon Se Miliye was the first programme which was then replaced by Apna hi Ghar Samajhiye known as Make Yourself at Home in 1966.

The programme produced by David Gretton was also repeated on BBC2 and on BBC radio.

Offering a mix of language lessons in everyday English and popular music from Indian and Pakistani films, the programme aimed to help Asians cope with everyday life.

Subsequently, shows like Nai Zindagi Naya Jeevan and Gharbar for women, appeared on BBC television.

Both radio and television progressively began to broadcast shows targeting Asians living and now settled in Britain.

BBC Radio shows like East and West, Midlands Masala and the emergence of BBC Asian Network as a station, all contributed to this programming.

It was the late 80s and 90s when BBC programming for Asians took a new direction, to appeal to new generations of British Asians.

The television programmes were produced by the BBC Asian Programmes Unit (APU), based at Pebble Mill in Birmingham.

The APU was headed by Narendhra Morar and subsequently taken over by Paresh Solanki during this era of BBC’s multicultural programming.

Other members of the team included Narinder Minhas, Tommy Nagra, Fatima Salaria, Farah Durrani, Sangita Manandhar, Gurdip Bhangoo, Jane Dunning and Sara Kozak.

We remember five popular shows from this special era of BBC Asian television.

NETWORK EAST

This weekly lifestyle and entertainment programme was launched in 1987 on BBC2 on Saturday mornings.

It was the first programme to be fully broadcast in English.

This lively show had a series of well-known presenters through its time, including, Valerie Vaz and Samantha Meah, Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Mo Dutta, Shahnaz Pakravan, Sudha Kumari (now known as Sudha Bhuchar), Sanjeev Kohli and Sonia Deol.

It featured lots of major stars and acts including Amitabh Bachchan, Mehmood, Salman Khan, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Gurdas Maan and Shobu Kapoor (Geeta in EastEnders).

With Bhangra bands being huge at the time, Azaad, Alaap, Heera, Apna Sangeet and many more were featured on the show.

The Network East Mega Mela event was the first major indoor mela held at the NEC in Birmingham.

The show featured and supported live acts and upcoming bands.

In 1998, Asia 2 was used to group Asian programmes shown on BBC 2 on Saturday mornings, starting with Network East: Big Talk, a show discussing Asian issues.

A late night version of the show called Network East Late was aired in 2001.

This was a programme produced to address current affairs and controversial issues affecting the South Asian communities in Britain.

Aired weekly from 1990, on BBC2 on Tuesday evenings, it tackled many areas of Asian life in its episodes. Including:

The increasing number of young Asians choosing mainstream pop over the traditional Asian music market after success of Babylon Zoo.
Growing numbers of elderly Asian parents who expected to be cared for by their children are finding themselves alone or in homes.
Increasing numbers of Asian women in Britain becoming involved in prostitution, after running away from sheltered and unhappy homes
EAST – tackled issue of prostitution

Some episodes of the series instigated complaints for their hard-hitting nature.

CAFE 21

The newer generations of British Asians had many social and personal issues to deal with during the 90s.

Cafe 21 was targeted at this youth and debated topics and matters concerning them.

The setting was usually a ‘student common room’ with an audience of young guests who debated topical issues with the presenter Rajesh Mirchandani.

Participants frequently discussed education, careers, religion, racism, relationships, politics, multiculturalism, integration and lots more.

It was aired on Saturday mornings on BBC2 from 1997.

BOLLYWOOD OR BUST

This programme was shown on BBC2 on a Saturday morning from 1994 and was an amazing concept of a gameshow using Bollywood as its theme.

Presenters of the show were first Mo Dutta and then Sanjeev Bhaskar.

Four contestants were invited into the studios to take part in a series of question and Bollywood trivia rounds.

Each round was introduced with a dramatic piece of Bollywood film music and each round was named in Hindi and English.

Each episode progressively led to a semi-final and then a final.

The winning prize was a fully paid trip to Bollywood itself and a chance to meet some of the biggest stars at that time, including, Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Dev Anand and many more.

FLAVOURS OF INDIA

At the time this was one of the first cookery television shows of its kind. It used the concept of on location cooking with the hugely popular, Madhur Jaffrey, as the cookery star, travelling across India.

The six-part series was directed by Navin Thapar and produced by Sara Kozak and a team from the BBC and India. It was aired from 1995.

Different cuisines were brought to you in each episode featuring a specific state of India and its speciality dishes. Including, Goa, Kerala, Gujarat, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Madhur narrated her visits and provided historical facts about each place and made the dishes outside on location.

A book was published to accompany the series.

Most of the above shows were aired on Saturday mornings on BBC 2, which was dominated by BBC Asian programmes – a history in the making, in its own unique way.

Although Asian programmes today are still part of the BBC agenda, the Asian Programmes Unit was closed in 2008. So, it’s unlikely that we shall ever witness another era of domination by shows like the ones we remember here.’

Tony Jover: ‘I recall we used to do a Top 10 Bollywood movies section, a fashion section and more. At one stage it was presented by Sanjeev Bhaskar. I used to edit Network East with Paresh Solanki.’

Viv Ellis: ‘I worked on the very first Network East under Narendhra Morar, as a director, doing studio and location shoots and editing. We recorded the show in the small studio (can’t remember what it was called) [Studio B] with a “band days” in studio A. We had all sorts of amazing music.’

Gordon Astley: ‘I remember my first TV job was boom op. at Gosta Green about 1970. I remember trying to get as near to a sitar as possible. Must have been one of the first of these shows?’

Bridget Catherine Vaughan: ‘I worked in the days of Ashok Rampal.’
