Roy Hill

I’ve heard from Terry Powell, that Roy Hill from costume sadly passed away a month ago (autumn 2017). Roy worked at Pebble Mill for over 10 years. Terry said that he was part of the ‘old gang’ and that old friends would like to know.

Thanks to Peter Church for adding the photo below, and to Terry Powell for identifying those in the photo. Included are I think: Roy Hill, Marc Ridley, Colin Bailey, Annie Arnold, Sally Pearson.

[Also in the photo are:]
Terry Powell: ‘Tudor George costume designer. My very good friend who I’ve worked with the last 25 years. Who as I text we are now designing. Comic relief together.’
Susie Astle: ‘Jan Nethercot, make up designer. Sue Peck costume. Steph dresser.’
Janice Rider: ‘As Susie said from left 2nd row correct but Sue Peck would have been a dresser then I imagine and Stephanie Hawkes next to her , probably costume assistant and Tudor George ( between Jan & Sue Peck – also known as Dist – would have been the costume designer as Terry says .’
Tim Dann: ‘Alfie Mayall..scene crew behind Sue & Steph.’
Gillian Hardle: ‘Left of camera with arms folded looks like Rob Prosser — grip; Camera asst Richard Ganiclifft is seated behind the camera next right looks like Chrissie Marshall and right of her is Bert Round – gaffer electrician. I recognise everyone but can’t put names to faces.’
Lesley Weaver: ‘John Williams lighting film cameraman behind Gavin Davies maybe?’

Cargo Kings was one of a handful of live plays from Pebble Mill transmitted in March 1983. By this time it was very unusual to stage television drama live, because of its limitations, so these plays were quite a brave enterprise.

These script front pages show the cast and crew of the drama, as well as the rehearsal schedule and scene order.

Thanks to Philip Thickett, who was one of the cameramen, presumably on camera 5, from the notes on the script, for sharing it.

BORRIS, (scribbled on the script) for those who don’t know was the drama rehearsal room which was part of the garage and outside broadcast block at the back of BBC Pebble Mill.

The following comments were left on the Pebble Mill Facebook page:

Terry Powell: ‘Yet, another show I worked on. We really did do some fabulous programmes.’

Janice Rider: ‘Yes indeed we did Terry – that was quite a nerve-wracking experience as I remember but we were all relieved we managed to pull it off including quick changes . See they spelled my name wrong on the running order as usual!’

Terry Powell: ‘Yes, indeed. But we still had fun. We literally went from one show to another in those days. We must have been like race horses.’

Amin Hassan

Sad news I’m afraid. BBC Pebble Mill dresser, Amin Hassan died in his sleep last Saturday (5th Nov 2016). Amin was a very popular character, and had many good friends at Pebble Mill. He worked on numerous productions, particularly dramas, over a period of many years.
