2nd Floor Bar – photos by Peter Poole

Photos by Peter Poole, no reproduction without permission.

The photos show the bar on the 2nd floor of Pebble Mill, before it was moved to the new Club building in the mid 1980s. The 2nd floor bar proved to be a creative melting pot, where staff from all departments mingled after recordings, at lunch time and at the end of the day.

The photos include Liz Nicholls, Martin Harris, Sharon Pemberton, John Allen, Gail Herbert and Geoff Watts.

Maggie Humphries: ‘Peter Skinner from Finance and Geoff Watts another couple of names’.

Janet Collins:  ‘I think it’s Sue Brown in a couple of photos’.

Susan Astle: ‘Definitely Sam from makeup -is she standing next to Graham Pettifer from the scene crew? From Susie Bankers’

Brian Johnson: ‘In one of the group photos , first from left, Alex who I think was Bar Manager for a time before leaving with Sarah (standing next to him) , to run a pub somewhere in Worcs I think. In front of them (seated) Colin from security who I believe sadly took his own life in the late 70s when he was still working in P Mill Security.’

Gail Herbert: ‘The tall guy in the group picture is Jeremy Pallant, producer of Farming, etc and I think Sue Williams in in the 3rd photo.’

Pebble Mill building – photos by Tim Savage

VT Editor, Tim Savage, took these photos of Pebble Mill in Autumn 2004, as the building was being de-commissioned.

In the photo of the entrance to the rear car park, someone seems to have helped themselves to a souvenir ‘C’ from the BBC logo!

The following comments were left on the Pebble Mill Facebook Group:

Gail Herbert: ‘It really is hard to realise that this building is no longer there – such happy memories.’

Brian Johnson: ‘London was always jealous of the success of P Mill so demolishing it under the guise of economy and using the ‘Mailbox’ made it look right on paper, but also made sure it was not a competitor to London productions (did I say London or Salford) ooops old age is a terrible thing, it seems to make you realise the truth.’

Pete Simpkin: ‘Still so fresh in the memory.’

Golden Oldie Picture Show – Living Doll

Photo by Gail Herbert, no reproduction without permission.

‘Golden Oldie Picture Show’ was an entertainment show, comprising of specially shot videos, recorded for hits which pre-dated the music video era.  The show was presented 7 linked by Radio 1 D.J., Dave Lee Travis.  It was produced by John King’s department at Pebble Mill between 1985-88.

The photo is of a shoot for the hit: ‘Living Doll’, written by Lionel Bart, and made famous by Cliff Richard in 1959.  I’m assuming that the photo is of someone ‘being’ Cliff Richard.

This is from a ‘Golden Oldie Picture Show’ shoot for the song, ‘Always Something There to Remind Me’. It was written by Bert Bacharach and Hal David in the early 1960s.  Different versions were recorded by Lou Johnson and Sandie Shaw, I’m not sure which one was used in ‘Golden Oldies’.

I’m not sure what the story behind this particular video was, but it seems to be of a transvestite recreating the scene featuring the famous Marilyn Munroe dress.

Please a add a comment if you can add any detail.

This photo is of the location shoot for ‘The Golden Oldie Picture Show’ music video of the hit song, ‘Come Outside’.  The song was a number one hit in 1962 for Mike Sarne, with vocals by actress Wendy Richard.  There was a cover version by Judge Dread in 1975. I’m not sure which version G.O.P.S. used.  The location for the shoot was at the Midlands Arts Centre, in Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston.
