Thanks to costume designer, Janice Rider, for making this publicity brochure for the 1997 drama Macbeth on the Estate available. The modern day adaptation of the Shakespearian play was set on the Ladywood Estate in Birmingham.

The drama starred, James Frain as Macbeth, Susan Vidler as Lady Macbeth, David Harewood as Macduff, and Ray Winstone as Duncan.

Alison Gilby was the producer, Julian Murphy the executive producer, Thea Harvey the associate producer and David Wilson the composer. Penny Woolcock adapted and directed the drama.

Macbeth on the Estate was recorded on the Ladywood Estate, in Birmingham. The modern day adaptation of Shakespeare’s play went out on BBC 2 in 1997. The film was adapted and directed by Penny Woolcock, produced by Alison Gilby, with executive producer, Julian Murphy. Graham Smith did the photography; John Dinwoodie, the editing; with music by David Wilson. John Ellis was the production designer.

The film starred: James Frain, Susan Vidler, David Harewood, Andrew Tiernan, Jo Dow, and Ray Winstone.

‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’ was a 3 part BBC 1 drama starring Richard E Grant in the title role.  It was transmitted in January 1999.  Elizabeth McGovern played Grant’s character’s wife, with Martin Shaw as Chauvelin, the head of the revolutionary French police, and the Scarlet Pimpernel’s chief adversary.  It also featured Christopher Fairbank, Anthony Green, Ronan Vibert, Emilia Fox, Denise Black, Gerard Murphy, James Callis, Peter Jeffrey, Suzanne Bertish and Jerome Willis.

The director was Patrick Lau; with producer, Julian Murphy.

The production was a co-production between BBC Birmingham and London Film Productions, and the Arts and Entertainment Network.

Specially shot interview with costume designer, Janice Rider, about the 1997 BBC Pebble Mill drama, ‘Macbeth on the Estate’.  This was a contemporary telling of the Shakespearian tragedy, set on a modern housing estate.  The drama was shot on the Ladywood estate in Birmingham. Penny Woolcock was the writer and director, Simon Curtis and Julian Murphy the executive producers, and Alison Gilby the producer. John Ellis was the production designer.

James Frain played Macbeth; Susan Vidler, Lady Macbeth; Ray Winstone, Duncan; and David Harewood, Macduff.
